My apologies.

As a white man in this society it is time for me to come clean. Frankly, I want to apologize to the oppressed for the intolerable acts that white privilege has done since the dawn of time. We’ve progressed to a place where major civil rights issues are being simply swept under the rug in hopes no one notices. For that, I am sorry. I feel guilt in a way that I will benefit from the white privilege that runs rampant in every part of our society.

The color of my skin doesn’t reflect my views on others. I believe that success and love doesn’t see race, creed, sexual orientation, or gender and that everyone deserves the opportunity to be successful and to be loved.

I apologize to the women who’s pay isn’t the same of their white male co-workers. Yet they work twice as hard because society says they have to be the perfect wife, the perfect mother, and the perfect CEO.

I apologize to the immigrants and refugees who seek asylum in this country and have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into their small businesses and our economy. Then to be told they’re “terrorists” and they need to go back to where they came from.

I apologize to minorities who are continuously marginalized and silenced when you speak up against injustice.

I apologize to the LGBT community that we live in fear for loving another human or simply being ourselves.

Lastly, I apologize to the children who are being exposed to the bigots, privilege, and hate because they will never know the true meaning of accepting everyone for who they are.

The only way we can make change is if we determine we want change. To my fellow white men, we have to be willing to sacrifice our privilege so others can live freely. We have to turn the injustices to justice and ensure all humans are treated with dignity and respect. We have to wake up and realize that everyone is destined for greatness and by oppressing them we are stopping this world from being what it truly can be.

Again, I apologize for the effects of white privilege on the very land that had been inhabited by Native Americans. The same people who fight for the rights to their own land and liberty. I promise to forgo my privilege and help someone else rise to be their best. This country was founded on the basic principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Free from an asterisk that restricted that to just white males.

I love and believe in everyone’s abilities to achieve success. Even those who disagree with everything I’ve written. We are all entitled to the freedom of speech but no one is entitled to the freedom of violence. Speak your opinion just as I have mine but don’t let the heat in your heart spill out in to the oppression of others. No one should live in fear to be who they were born to be.
